How to Run a Ping and Traceroute Test?

What is a Ping Test?

Ping test is just a sequence of short and small connections sent across to the website’s IP address, and monitors both success and the response time. Most of the time, 4 pings are exchanged in order to occur a connection between you and the remote computer. As you can modify the intervals between the connections, the process is continuous.

What is a Traceroute Test?

By the use of Traceroute test, a standard link is able to run via the Command/Terminal box. The objectives of the test will be to gather such details as ‘hops’ taken and response time for each ‘hop’. The ‘hop’ here refers to a computer or server utilised for the purpose of guiding your device to route out your way to the particular website or IP address you have chosen. Typically hops anywhere from 5 to 20 can be seen on any web page request.

Importance

The network connection issue can be checked and traced by using ping or tracert test. This will help you find the most convenient situation to find, identify or exclude the non-connection or connection issue or locate the point of disruption in the network.

What is common in running each test is the process, and the way they are used to start them differ by the operating systems.

The three different operating system types that allow us to do a Ping and Traceroute test are demonstrated in this video:

  • Windows 10

  • Apple Mac

  • Linux Ubuntu Flavor

Ping test on Windows 10 Operating System:

  • Go to the address box at the bottom section of the window and type command prompt and press enter.

  • In the other window there will be a space where you should type ping or website name and or address of IP and press enter.

  • This server will receive and process four pings from your computer. Upon the completion of each ping query, a summary of the statistics as well as results will be shown in the box.

  • If the statistic did not get the provide result will be Request timed out.

  • A case of pinging a website twenty five times is made by the use of this command ‘ping website name or ip address -n 25’ and pressed enter.

Traceroute test on Windows 10 Operating System:

  • In the same window type this command tracert space www.google.com or 192.168.0.2 and press enter.

  • This extends the ability of a network administrator to monitor abnormalities and troubleshoot improper routing problems. It delivers the IP addresses of the routers that it reached from the end stops of the path.

  • When your connection keeps low every now and then, it means that there is something wrong with the internet.

  • This system will take some time to process and when it finishes it will display the message ‘Trace Complete’.

Apple Mac Operating System:

There are two ways to do a Ping and Traceroute test on an Apple Mac computer:

1. Terminal

These easy methods may be used to conduct a Ping and Traceroute test from Terminal:

  • One of the easy ways to access the terminal is by combining the command and space bar keys to bring up the Spotlight Search if you are on desktop.

  • Then run Spotlight Search again and type Terminal this time.

  • Here, type the following command, ping space website name or IP address and then press enter.

  • Pinging a website is done by clicking a pend. Each ping result will be displayed as well as the statistics summary.

  • If you don’t already get the statistics of the site, it will turn the result as Request timed out.

  • Now run for traceroute: traceroute space web site name or IP and then press enter.

  • It requires some time and traces the route along which a packet is sent in real-time on an IP network from source to the destination point. It reports to the IP addresses of all routers that it pinged in the lead up to the pathway.

  • If you experience frequent connection failure, it means your wired network or internet connection is faulty.

2.  Network Utility

These easy procedures may be used to conduct a Ping and Traceroute test using Network Utility:

  • To access the utility section which controls networking, first, you would need to hit command and space bar key from the keyboard to get Spotlight Search at the desktop.

  • Currently in Spotlight Search enter Network Utility and double click on the result.

  • Go to ‘Ping’.

  • This will be a ping request for IP address.

  • In that, you will have the choice between unlimited sends for a set number of pings.

  • It is suggested to use 4-10 beacons in each examination.

  • Now, click on test to have the test.

  • The result of the ping attempts will be displayed below and the summary of the statistics will appear in another window that will be conjured below the result.

  • Each and every ping packet must be received correctly or in case they are lost or fail then it is the internet issue.

  • In the moment, open Traceroute and type in the website name or IP address.

  • Click on trace.

  • This procedure will probably take quite a while and just watch statistics be it.

Ping test on Linux Ubuntu operating system:

  • To open the terminal on Ubuntu press the shortcut keys Ctrl + Alt + t.

  • In the command prompt, just type ping site website or address and press enter.

  • Each attempted ping result will be in a different window and they will also come with a summary of the statistics.

  • If the whole ping request time out or packet loss or complete requests fail it means internet is the issue.

  • Pinging the website can be done 10 times using this command

  • ‘ping-c 10 website name and IP address’ and press enter.

Traceroute test on Linux Ubuntu operating system:

  • On the same window type the command traceroute and space URL or IP address and press Enter.

  • This order is applied to a packet to monitor its path on the Internet Protocol (IP) network in real-time from the source to the destination point. It logs IP addresses of all routers that it found by pinging in between the pathway.

  • Case your network drops often means that there is a problem with the internet connection.

  • This will be something of a process, and that’s it, we are done.

  • Therefore you can use these two approaches to Ping and Traceroute.
