WordPress, by default, installs with sample content such as posts, pages, and comments, designed to help new users get familiar with the platform. However, if you are setting up a live website, it is essential to remove these placeholder items to maintain a professional appearance and avoid confusion. This guide will walk you through how to remove sample comments and posts from your WordPress website in a few simple steps.
To get started, log in to your WordPress dashboard using your admin credentials. The dashboard is the control center for managing your website’s content, themes, wordpress plugins, and more. Once you are logged in, you will have access to all the features needed to clean up sample posts and comments.
When you first install WordPress, a sample post titled "Hello World!" is automatically created. This post is used to demonstrate how blog posts work on the platform, but it isn’t something you’ll want on your live site.
Navigate to the Posts Section: In the WordPress dashboard, locate the "Posts" option on the left sidebar. Click on it to view all the posts currently available on your website.
Locate the "Hello World!" Post: Then you should be able to see the default post, "Hello World!" on the list.
Delete the Post:
Hover over the post title, and a few options will appear under it.
Click on the "Trash" option. This will then move the post to the trash folder.
Empty the Trash:
After moving the post to the trash, click on the "Trash" link at the top of the posts list.
Here, you will see all the deleted posts.
If you want to permanently remove the "Hello World!" post from your site then Click on "Empty Trash"
Along with sample posts, WordPress also installs a sample page titled "Sample Page." If you don't intend to use it, follow these steps to remove it:
Navigate to the Pages Section: On the dashboard, locate "Pages" in the left sidebar.
Locate the Sample Page: You should find the default "Sample Page" listed.
Delete the Page:
Hover over the page title and select "Trash."
As with the post, navigate to the "Trash" section and empty it to permanently delete the sample page.
Once you have deleted the sample posts and pages, you may still see a sample comment that was automatically added to the "Hello World!" post. Since the post is now deleted, you should also remove the associated comment.
Navigate to the Comments Section: On the dashboard, click on "Comments" in the left sidebar. This will display all the comments on your site.
Locate the Sample Comment: The sample comment will typically read something like "Hi, this is a comment. To get started with moderating, editing, and deleting comments, please visit the Comments screen in the dashboard."
Delete the Comment:
Hover over the comment, and you will see options such as "Approve," "Reply," "Quick Edit," and "Trash."
Click on "Trash" to move the comment to the trash folder.
Empty the Trash: Just like with posts, click on the "Trash" link in the comments section and empty it to permanently remove the sample comment.
Sample content often includes categories and tags that you might not need. It’s a good practice to clean these up to keep your website organized.
Navigate to Posts > Categories: Here you can view and manage all your post categories. If there are any unused or sample categories, hover over them and click "Delete."
Navigate to Posts > Tags: Similarly, review any tags that were automatically added and remove those that are unnecessary.
Once you have deleted the sample posts, pages, comments, and cleaned up categories and tags, it’s a good idea to review your website to ensure everything looks clean and professional.
Visit Your Website: Navigate to the frontend of your website by clicking on your site’s name at the top-left of the dashboard.
Check for Any Remaining Placeholder Content: Scroll through the homepage and other sections to ensure no sample content is left behind.
Clear the Cache (Optional): If your site is using a caching plugin, clear the cache to make sure the changes reflect on the live website.
